Samsung has recently launched their latest model Galaxy A5 in their Alpha range. It is a smart looking, sleek finish and mid-priced phone, which accelerated the repute of Samsung once more. After the mixed reviews from Galaxy S5, they required something bigger like Galaxy Alpha and Note 4.
This South Korean giant is always looking for something refreshing and new in the market. A phone that is pocket-friendly. Thus, they launched Galaxy A5, an affordable range of Smartphones with low spec list, but have an upper hand in the design aspects with their metal unibody and microSD slot.
The phone is available in black, silver, gold and white colors. A5 stands for five inches screen and weighs just 123gm and it is featherlike. In your hand it will look like a remarkable svelte, since its maximum thickness is about 6.7mm, it is slightly slimmer than the iPhone 6, which is 129g and 6.9mm. However, it does not look like iPhone 6, but definitely comes with an aluminum unibody. You will find the phone with chamfered aluminum edges that appear as a plastic rear cover, and does not feel like metal. With their smooth glass front, the phone looks like a premium phone. The absence of any flex means that the build quality is good.
As soon as you turn on the phone you will find that the vibrant colors of the Super AMOLED display comes up with different viewing angles. It comes with a 13 MP camera at the rear end and LED flash. It has a 5 MP camera in the front for the Selfie freaks. For the internal sections, there are definitely some compromises.
Snapdragon 410 processor is not so impressive and does not top the benchmarks. The phone runs on the older version of Android KitKat rather than using Lollipop. It is aptly priced at £299 inclusive VAT.
Let us get a detailed review of Samsung Galaxy A5 here in this article to harness your buying skills.
It has defeated the predecessors Galaxy Alpha by its screen size of 5 inches, which had 4.7 inches of screen. It decided to go without a memory expansion but keep the removable battery feature intact. In its metal band, you are going to find two removable trays that have design similar to iPhone. At a glance, one can definitely took it for a mistaken identity as a bigger version of iPhone 5.
The bottom of the phone is the place for micro USB charge, sync port and for the headphone jack. Just on the left side of the home, you can locate a volume rocker and to the opposite side you will locate a power button. The setup is similar to the iPhone 6. At the top of the phone, you will locate a tiny hole for the microphone.
It comes with an advanced screen technology of Super AMOLED display that helps to offset the lower resolution. It is like a Full HD display on first sight, and looks superior in quality compared to A3. With a fitted earpiece, proximal and ambient light sensors and a 5MP front facing camera as well.
Samsung Galaxy A5 is available in Light Blue, Champagne Gold, Midnight Black, Platinum Silver or Soft Pink colors. If you like a shimmery effect on your Smartphone, you will find it in Galaxy A5’s rear cover, but you cannot remove it and neither their battery. You might locate three black dots at the top of screen if you find a white colored phone, but in the black colored model, it is hardly visible.
Software and Hardware Features:
At a first glance, the Galaxy A5 might seem overly priced, since the screen comes with an effective resolution of 1280x720. As said earlier that this new Samsung product comes with a great-quality AMOLED screen along with some nice features. It includes extreme power saving, but if every pixel matters, then you must not count on this phone as it is of a lower resolution compared to Galaxy S6.
The phone comes with an internal storage of 2GB RAM and a microSD slot that can expand up to 64GB of extra storage. Well, with this phone, you are not going to get 802.11ac Wi-Fi, but you will find that 802.11n radio works on both the 2.4- and 5GHz. The phone also comes with Bluetooth 4.0, NFC, GPS and ANT+.
When you compared the phone to Galaxy S5, you will miss some giant features in it such as fingerprint scanner, heart-rate sensor, IR blaster and lots more. Well, for a few people this feature might be fascinating.
The phone comes with a 64-bit Qualcomm Snapdragon 410 chipset and 2GB of RAM. You will also find a quad-core 1.2GHz Cortex-A53 processor and Adreno 306 GPU. Well, the Snapdragon 400 abilities are quite a bit old, but Galaxy A5 should see a speed benefit compared to the latest version.
Keep in mind that anything below 30fps isn't smooth, but luckily as per the benchmark settings Galaxy A5 has just scored the same marks. Samsung Galaxy A5 is not a speed demon, however apart from their fancying. In the Geekbench, they have scored 483 and 1476 for the single- and multicore tests respectively. On the A5, we saw 3.9fps in Manhattan and 9.2fps in T-Rex compared to that Moto E that managed near about 6 and 13fps respectively. In the Sunspider, A5 completed the web-based test suite in 735ms. It is able to load web pages quickly, except the script heavy sites.
The new Samsung Galaxy A5 comes with a 2300mAh cell on board compared to other small sized phone like it, but the battery in not removable. With this new model from Samsung, you will get 8 hours of 3G web browsing and 12 hours of video playback. The call time of the phone is impressive and A5 scored 74 hours of endurance in different tests.
The phone comes with Ultra Power Saving mode that is common in the flagship phones of Samsung. This is able to turn the display of the phone to grayscale, disable the mobile data when the screen shuts off, and restrict you from using the app to extend the standby time, when you just 10% of the power retaining. Galaxy A5 lasted for 6 hours and 15 minutes, which is impressive.
A5 is having a 13 MP and 4:3 aspect ratio and by default, it is set to 9 MP, 16:9 just like other Android phones. The S5’s visibility is far better than A5 and you will notice a lack of detail, when you zoom the images in A5. We might sound a little meticulous, but A5 as a mid-range phone has a great camera. It is able to capture more detailed photo than an 8 MP iPhone 6 or 5 MP Moto G. it is able to expose the right colors and realistic images and the lens are sharp enough. You can easily customize the settings available in the quick access car to adjust ISO and exposure.
Right side of the phone has the major camera controls two on-screen shutter keys, mode switcher and gallery shortcut. On the left, there is front/back camera toggle. However, panorama or continuous shooting modes come as default but HDR is not, you need to install it. It is easy to click selfies with the camera, just hold when using the front camera and trigger a two-second countdown timer. The photo quality of the front camera is good.
As for videos, the resolution is 1920x1080 at 30fps from the rear camera. It is sharp and has lot of details, but you will find no optical stabilization and makes it handheld footage shakier than we would like.
Samsung means there were common premonition that they are cheap, plastic and full of useless bloatware. However, the South Korean manufacturer has slammed the naysayer right away by making Samsung Galaxy A5 way pricier compared to its rivals. Samsung just wanted to express a point that they are a maker who also make quality phones and not just cheap. Company has already proved it with their Galaxy Alpha and Galaxy Note 4. The phone is now available at a price of £299 inclusive VAT in the Amazon stores. In US the price ranges from $273 and in France, it is € 285. Just against their sister smartphones Galaxy S5 Mini, Galaxy Alpha and budget friendly S4 this is increasingly low cost and rather redresses the balance.
Galaxy A5 leaves a positive impact on its buyers and first on-lookers. The phone looks awesome in anyone’s hand and it is incomparably the best phone in the mid-range market. However, a bit underpowered compared to other Samsung smartphones, the design is definitely a step forward along with its 13 MP camera.
It is enough to tempt the next-gen customers. However, for the selfies freaks this is a great choice with their 5 MP front facing camera offering good quality pictures.
As per the design rules it seems that the price of the phone could have been a little less. However, the price will run down slowly as soon as the buying season rolls out heavily setting a craze for the phone.
